Professor and Graduates of the UCLM Higher School of Informatics Winners of the Prestigious NASA Honor Awards 2022

CIUDAD REAL, July 13, 2023 – The Higher School of Informatics (ESI) of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) is proud to announce that a group of its members, belonging to the company Ubotica Technologies, has been awarded the prestigious award NASA Honor Awards 2022 in the Group Achievement Award category. This recognition is given to individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to NASA's mission.

Interview with José Luis Espinosa on Cadena Ser

The prize was awarded to the team ISS Autonomy & Instrument Processing Demo Team, which includes the teacher Jose Luis Espinosa and the graduates Juan Romero y Elena Hervas. This team has demonstrated the autonomy and processing capacity of Spaceborne Computing 2 computers using embedded systems such as Qualcomm Snapdragon or Intel Myriad on board the International Space Station.

The awarded work is the result of a collaboration between ubotica, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the company Hewlett-Packard (HP). Although the award was given specifically to Espinosa, Romero and Hervás, it is important to note that other ESI graduates have played a key role in obtaining this recognition. Among them are José María Rico Saavedra, Rosana Rodríguez-Bobada Aranda, Álvaro Guerrero del Pozo, David González Bermúdez, Pablo Tomás Toledano González, Jesús Gamero Tello, Alberto Velasco Mata, José Manuel Heredia Oliver, Diego Guerrero del Pozo and Daniel Muñoz Fuentes. .

The awarded work focused on the preparation and integration of different models, AI algorithms and neural networks within various embedded systems to analyze their use in space. Future missions could take advantage of the image processing capabilities and other data on the satellite itself, without the need to send it to Earth, to detect scientific events, generate knowledge or respond autonomously.

The ESI and the UCLM congratulate all the winners for such a prestigious recognition.
