A new school model

Inspired by the smart city concept, the smart ESI project takes on the challenge of turning the Escuela Superior de Informática into a benchmark model that uses and develops technologies to improve its operation, making it more energy efficient and more sustainable, and to offer services of added value to the ESI community (students, PDI and PAS), aimed at increasing their knowledge about the School and its environment.

With the smart ESI project, we undertake the smartification of our school, providing it with the necessary infrastructure to carry out the concept and the use and integration of enabling technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), the use of renewable energies, cloud computing , artificial intelligence, augmented reality or computer vision, developed as part of the research carried out in the different research groups of the School. The smartification process must be: cross-cutting (including research groups), with a strong technological component that allows for dense, real-time monitoring of variables of interest, that provides unprecedented added value, that is precisely quantifiable, transparent and scalable so that it can be extended gradually.

The smart ESI project addresses two fundamental objectives:

  1. Offer the ESI community an agile and flexible framework for the cohesion and demonstration of ICT, research and innovation developed by research groups,
  2. Provide the ESI community, and society in general, with a catalog of intelligent services that can be articulated via the previous framework, aimed at increasing the level of knowledge about our School, its conditions and status, its environment or infrastructure.

Under the services paradigm, the smart ESI project will be able to offer us precise and instant answers to questions such as:

  • What is the annual water and electricity consumption of the Fermín Caballero building?
  • Do I have a free space in the car park?
  • The projector in classroom A1.1 does not work. I take a photo with my mobile and send it through my app to the technicians.
  • On the display I am seeing the CO value2 from the Anita Borg classroom. It is necessary to open the windows.
  • How much energy is the solar panel producing today?
  • Do we do the work now in the ALU or is it full?
  • How many people are inside the Fermín Caballero building?
  • I just received on my mobile the news of the performance of the play next Tuesday.
  • How many people are connected to this WiFi hotspot?
  • And much more…

Deployment

SmartESI It is being built in various phases of development. In each phase, a deployment will be carried out that will imply acting on the 3 levels in the architecture (from bottom to top): level 1 (infrastructure), level 2 (business) and level 3 (data presentation).

The roadmap of the smart ESI project can be found in this presentation. In these pages we will publish the relevant news related to the project. If you want to know more, contact School loneliness.
