March 8, 2024 – International Women's Day

From the Management we wish you a happy International Women's Day!

In parallel with numerous advances, the presence of women in the classrooms of Engineering degrees is still low as shown by the figures prepared by the Delegation of the rector for Equality Policies, which we attach and which have been published on our notice boards. However, as a positive fact, in the areas of Engineering and Architecture the percentage of women professors and full professors corresponds to the presence in the Degree, being higher in the case of our School.

We must continue working to improve this situation and to advance gender equality in its entirety and from all angles. Equality in rights includes the right to decide. Regarding the distribution by gender in the different job profiles related to IT, the Report 60+ Women in Tech Statistics You Need to Know in 2023 – Closing the Gaps shows that women make up around 30% in areas such as VR, AR and video games, while they are 20% or less in industrial IoT, web applications or back-end.

On a professional level, the presence of women in technological fields is not improving fast enough. In fact, this report states that (i) the percentage of women working in technology is now lower than in 1984 (32% compared to 35%), (ii) the percentage of women in technology leadership positions has fallen to 28 % in 2023, (iii) 50% of women in technology jobs leave them by age 35, and (iv) 32% of women in technical and engineering jobs are often the only woman in the workroom .

Today's society and the challenges that we will have to face in the coming years cannot allow this situation, which does not ensure having the best talent and leadership in society as a whole. Fortunately, the future is hopeful: awareness is becoming stronger and educational programs and economic efforts are being carried out, and due attention is being paid to gender equity and justice in the dizzying developments that some of the lines are experiencing. current jobs in IT.

A big hug on this special day of celebration,

The Board
