6M Conference – What do we talk about when we talk about Responsible AI?

On Wednesday, March 6, at 11.30:XNUMX a.m., in the assembly hall, Alan Turing visits us Alberto José Bugarín Diz to give the conference entitled What do we talk about when we talk about Responsible Artificial Intelligence?, second conference of Spring 2024 Lecture Series.

Place and time
Higher School of Informatics, Paseo de la Universidad, 4 (Ciudad Real). Wednesday, March 6, in the Alan Turing assembly hall from 11.30:13 a.m. to XNUMX p.m.

Talk Summary:

The omnipresence of smart applications, added to the fact that interaction with them is increasingly natural, occurs transparently for users, and in all types of contexts and moments (professional, private, family,...), The artificial intelligence scientific community has been pointing out for some time the need to ensure its reliability, through designs, models and validation methodologies that ensure its quality and correct functioning from multiple dimensions. In the talk we will analyze some of the dimensions that define reliable artificial intelligence, such as transparency, explainability, robustness, ... and the leap towards responsible artificial intelligence, all contextualized within the framework of the upcoming entry into force of European regulations. on artificial intelligence (“AI Act”), the first comprehensive law worldwide in this area.

Brief CV of Alberto J. Bugarín

CV. I am a University Professor and coordinator of the Intelligent Systems Group (GSI) in the CiTIUS-Singular Research Center for Intelligent Technologies from the University of Santiago de Compostela.

My lines of research focus on different areas of artificial intelligence and its applications‚ such as natural language generation (“Data-To-Text” systems)‚ reliable AI, flexible computing (“soft computing”)‚ machine learning and representation of approximate knowledge and reasoning.

I am co-author of almost 230 scientific works on these topics and I have participated in more than 63 R&D projects and innovation and transfer contracts‚ being principal investigator in 25 of them. I have also participated in scientific dissemination projects and am a member of various thematic research networks, including the recently awarded TELSEC4TAI network on “Reliable artificial intelligence: technical, ethical, legal, cultural and socio-economic challenges,” led by CiTIUS.

I am currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (AEPIA), secretary of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN) and member of the Organizing Committee of the “27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI)” which will take place in Santiago de Compostela in October 2024. On an academic level, I am also coordinator of the Degree in Artificial Intelligence taught at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
