ResiCLA and HELP deliver €1112 to the Red Cross

The UCLM School of Computer Science donates 1112 euros to the Red Cross for those affected by the La Palma volcano. The solidarity project ResiCLA and AYUDA, born seven months ago at the Higher School of Computer Science of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) to raise funds for those affected by the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, has managed to raise 1112 euros. The delivery of the check to the Red Cross, an institution that has been providing emergency aid to those affected by the eruption, took place on September 29 in a ceremony held at the academic center itself with the presence of the vice-rector for Culture, Sports and Responsibility Social, Cesar Sanchez; the professor behind the initiative, José Jesús Castro; and the provincial president of the Ciudad Real Red Cross, Rosario Lafuente.

The ResiCLA and AYUDA online flea market has been part of the work of the Electronic Commerce subject of the Degree in Computer Engineering and is the collaborative result of 30 students and of combining the project-based learning methodology with social commitment. In the words of Vice Chancellor César Sánchez, it is the "perfect project within the umbrella of responsibility, because it combines knowledge, research, transfer and part of our main reason for being as a University, our students, who have wanted to get involved in a social action to make that the university community be a little better”.

Precisely, one of those involved in this initiative, the student Adrián Sánchez-Miguel, has pointed out that it has been a very satisfying experience to collaborate with those who are no longer in the news, but still need help. He also explained that the project was "a challenge" for all the students involved, which little by little became a reality with the support and motivation of Professor José Jesús Castro, who has been presenting a project to his students for eight years different digital and that always redounds to the benefit of others. To date, they had been associations with the transformation or creation of their web portals and, on this occasion, the people of La Palma, since the project entailed an economic collection.

For her part, the president of Cruz Roja Ciudad Real thanked the University of Castilla-La Mancha, and especially its young students, for the "solidarity" shown, which "cannot go out of style." “This solidarity initiative comes at a very good time because we cannot leave and forget those who suffered and are suffering first-hand the consequences of the volcano”, she stated.

The act of delivering the check was also attended by the director of the Higher School of Computing, Crescencio Bravo, who stressed that this project highlights the role of computing in the service and advancement of society.

During it, he was connected via videoconference with Red Cross officials in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who explained the work carried out by the humanitarian organization on the ground during and after the eruption of Cumbre Vieja.
