The karateka Sandra Sánchez, the Pozuelo de Calatrava Handball Club and the director of the Play Clean program, Francisco Javier Martín del Burgo, will receive the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) Awards for Sports 2021 at a gala to be held in Toledo after Christmas parties. Announced through the Vice President for Culture, Sports and Social Responsibility, the awards recognize people, entities or initiatives related to the defense and promotion of human values ​​associated with sports practice.

A jury chaired by the rector, Julián Garde, has unanimously agreed to award the prize in the Promotion of Values ​​in Sport category to Francisco Javier Martín del Burgo, for his activity in the promotion and management of sport, and to CB Pozuelo de Calatrava for the promotion of social values ​​in sport. 

Martín del Burgo has been director of the State Anti-Doping Agency and has to his credit, among other distinctions, the National Sports Award granted by the Ministry of Education and Science (Higher Sports Council) 'Infanta Elena', 2006, for the program Fair Play, aimed at the educational system of the region during his tenure as Deputy Minister of Sport of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Castilla-La Mancha Community Board.

For its part, the CB Pozuelo de Calatrava has two championships and one runner-up in Spain and more than twenty regional championships. In addition, it promotes the practice of sport with the creation of sports schools with 12 base handball teams and four federated teams, as well as carrying out free activities, especially in rural areas. The jury also highlights its social commitment through charity events, visits to hospital pediatric units and various collaborations with non-profit entities.

In the Promotion of Sports Practice modality, the jury has unanimously decided to award the prize to Sandra Sánchez, an elite athlete in karate and a graduate of the UCLM. Recognized by the World Karate Federation as the best karateka in kata history, in 2021 she has won the five major championships in which she participated: the Spanish Championship, the European Championship, the Tokyo Olympics, the World Circuit and the Karate Championship. World. In 2017 she received the National Sports Award from Spain and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the number of medals she has won on the world circuit.
