Best article of the Conference on University Teaching of Informatics

The Society of Software Engineering and Software Development Technologies (Sistedes) has awarded the Best Article Award at the conference of the Conference on University Teaching of Informatics -JENUI 2018- to the work Comprehensive training in the intensification of Computer Engineering Software in the Degree in Computer Engineering, by the professors of the Higher School of Computer Science of the University of Castilla-La Mancha Félix O. García, David G. Rosado, Mª Ángeles Moraga and Manuel A. Serrano.

The article Comprehensive training in the intensification of Software Engineering in the Degree in Computer Engineering, of which the professors of the Higher School of Computer Science of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) Félix Óscar García, David García Rosado, are authors. María Ángeles Moraga and Manuel Ángel Serrano, has been awarded the Prize for the Best Article of the Conference on University Teaching of Informatics -JENUI 2018- granted by the Software Engineering and Software Development Technologies Society (Sistedes).

According to experts, Software Engineering students traditionally acquire the skills of each subject through non-real work that is limited in complexity and scope. In the award-winning article, the UCLM professors present a training proposal with a transversal approach, uniting various subjects to propose more complex and realistic software development cases, addressing both the technical and management perspectives in a common project.

In the work, its authors explain, the main restrictions are addressed, such as the temporality of the subjects, student enrollment, homogeneous evaluation system, team formation, common calendar or joint reviews with the students. In addition, it presents some first evidence of the viability of the proposal, showing the results of its application in the 2017/2018 academic year as well as the opinion of the students enrolled, demonstrating a good acceptance.

The JENUI 2018 evaluation committee unanimously awarded the prize to the article by the professors of the Escuela Superior de Informática at the Ciudad Real Campus because the work, among other issues, falls within the field of Software Engineering and is aligned “clearly” with the themes of Sistedes; and illustrates "how a practical case in this discipline can be a transversal project to multiple subjects and, at the same time, an adequate vehicular element for teamwork and project-based learning".

Similarly, the jury considered that the award-winning work shows "how to establish an integrated evaluation mechanism for a set of subjects"; that the experience has obtained “satisfactory results and can be perfectly extrapolated to subjects of the Software Engineering Intensification” at other universities; that “the increase in the complexity of the project that the students carry out allows them to approach a large set of tools and techniques similar to those that the students will find in the labor market”; and that the authors have made "an exhaustive analysis of the advantages of the proposal and its limitations."
