World Computer Day
Today, December 9, 2023, we celebrate World Computing Day, commemorating the birth of Grace Murray Hopper, a leading figure in the history of computing and known for being one of the first female programmers and a pioneer in the field. Born on December 9, 1906 in New York, Grace Hopper made significant contributions to the development of computer science, such as the development of the first compiler. Hopper also promoted the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, a high-level programming language that is still used and popularly known.
The recognition of Grace Hopper and her legacy has been celebrated since 1983, when this date was proposed at the First Meeting of Computer Professionals. This celebration not only honors her memory, but also highlights the importance of computing in the modern world.
Happy World Computer Day.
