Deployment of IoT devices to optimize energy consumption

We continue to learn about the Final Degree Projects awarded in the Third edition of the Turing Machine Awards. On this occasion the one made by Juan Bautista Castaño, awarded by the classroom Ubotica Technologies, was directed by María Soledad Escolar Díaz and Javier Alonso Albusac Jiménez. Juan Bautista Castaño's TFG focuses on the deployment of IoT devices to monitor and optimize energy consumption in a smart building.

The project is integrated with the initiative SMART-ESI, in order to convert the Higher School of Informatics into an intelligent building and thus improve its operation, sustainability and efficiency. The project designs a multi-layer architecture, each with a specific function and the ability to interact with the others, including sensors and actuators to monitor and regulate the environment, a data processing and task automation layer, and a system for data visualization and savings simulation.

The actions performed at each layer include the selection of appropriate devices to measure environmental variables and regulate energy consumption. Wireless technologies such as LoRa and WiFi were used to ensure coverage throughout the school, and protocols such as CHIRPSTACK and MQTT were implemented. The database is managed with MariaDB and is connected to Home Assistant for data integration and visualization. Automations were programmed to adjust classroom conditions according to the schedule and environmental needs, and savings scenarios were established based on controlling the on and off of heating and air conditioning systems.
