The National University of La Plata (UNLP) awarded the highest distinction of Honorary Doctorate the teacher Mario Gerardo Piattini Velthuis. This event took place during the XI Conference on Cloud Computing, Big Data & Emerging Topics (JCC-BD&ET), organized by the Faculty of Informatics of the institution.

This recognition, endorsed by the Superior Council of the UNLP at the request of the academic unit, was granted by the rector of the University, Martín López Armengol, and Marcelo Naiouf, dean of the Faculty of Informatics.

The act was attended by notable figures such as the General Secretary of the University, Patricio Lorente, the director of III-LIDI, Patricia Pesado, the coordinator of Postgraduate Informatics, Armando De Giusti and the Secretary of Science and Technology of the Faculty , Laura Lanzarini.

During the ceremony, López Armengol expressed his honor in distinguishing an entrepreneurial professional who has a great career in the academic and scientific field. Piattini Velthuis, for his part, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the UNLP Faculty of Informatics as a leading institution in Latin America, in addition to reaffirming his commitment to the continuous improvement of the quality and sustainability of information systems, and ultimately, of society and people's quality of life.

Piattini Velthuis career

Mario Piattini is Professor of Computer Languages ​​and Systems at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), where he codirects the Alarcos Research Group, specialized in quality of information systems. His areas of work include software engineering, quantum computing, information technology governance and auditing, and data engineering. He has been director of the UCLM-Indra Mixed Software Research and Development Center, coordinator of the Computer Science and Information Technology Area of ​​the National Evaluation and Foresight Agency (ANEP), and director of the Institute of Technologies and Information Systems of the UCLM. He is one of the ten best researchers in Spain in Computer Science in 2022 according to the Research.com ranking; and he is part of the list of most cited scientists in the world developed at Stanford University. It is also an Aritmel Award from the Spanish Computer Science Society (SCIE). Recently, in March 2023, he received the National Computer Engineering Award at the Royal Academy of Engineering in Madrid.

Piattini Velthuis is a PhD in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He has a degree in Computer Science and a degree in Psychology. In addition, he has a Specialization in Information Technology in Business Management.

He also completed postgraduate studies in the Master in Systems Audit and the Diploma in Quality in Spain and the Master in Project Management in the United States. She has more than 10 international certifications related to Software Engineering, Systems Audit and Project Management. Since 1994, he has worked as a university professor in Spain, reaching the category of University Professor at the Higher School of Informatics of the University of Castilla La Mancha (UCLM).

In addition, he has actively participated in the direction and management of postgraduate programs, in the founding of institutes and research groups, and has contributed to more than 200 publications in software engineering journals, as well as numerous doctoral theses and research projects. . Author of 35 books on Software Engineering, Databases and Information Systems Audits, his publications are used as reference material in universities around the world.

Renowned for his participation in technology transfer, Piattini Velthuis has founded several spinoffs, including Alarcos Quality Center, SL, awarded as an Innovative SME.

Lastly, it is important to mention that Dr. Piattini Velthuis has maintained a long collaborative relationship with Argentine universities, particularly with the postgraduate program at the Faculty of Informatics at UNLP.
