The ARCO Research Group presents the SHAPES European project at Mineco

The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation (Mineco) commemorated World Telecommunications and Information Society Day with a conference in which researchers from the ARCO group of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) presented the SHAPES project, of which the gorup is a participant. It is a European project that involves 36 institutions from 14 countries, and whose objective is to develop digital solutions that allow maintaining the independence and quality of life of the elderly, while improving the sustainability of the health and care system .

The University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) presented at the headquarters of the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation (Mineco), coinciding with the celebration of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day. Information, the European project 'Smart and Healthy Ageing through People Engaging in Supportive Systems' (SHAPES), in which it participates through the Architecture and Computer Networks research group (ARCO), from the Higher School of Informatics.

The SHAPES project, financed by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 program with 21 million euros, involves 36 institutions from 14 European countries and aims to develop digital solutions that allow maintaining the independence and quality of life of the elderly, while improving the sustainability of the healthcare and health system.

During the conference, led by the professor of the Ciudad Real School of Computer Science and researcher of the ARCO group, Juan Carlos López, his center and group colleague Xavier del Toro, announced the results of the work carried out by the UCLM during the development of SHAPES, an interoperable platform that will offer a network of interconnected digital products and services on a large scale, with the aim of empowering older people, families and caregivers to solve real and significant problems.

SHAPES began its journey in November 2019 and will be in force until October 2023. The work of the ARCO group of the UCLM in this project consists of providing technological solutions based on wearable devices, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, robotics,... for the assistance and health care in their place of residence for the elderly or people with special needs. In addition, it is responsible for the deployment of one of the seven pilots that have been proposed to validate the results of the project and that, focused on physical rehabilitation at home, will allow demonstrating the benefits that these systems provide.

The conference was opened by the General Director of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Content of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation), Arturo Azcorra; and by the dean of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers, Marta Balenciaga. The closing was carried out by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Roberto Sánchez. In it, the H2020 PHARAON project was presented by the director of the Electronics Department of the CETEM Technological Center; and the round table 'Digital technologies for the elderly and healthy ageing' was held, in which, among others, the head of the Geriatrics service of the Albacete University Hospital Complex, the UCLM professor Pedro Abizanda participated. 

The International Telecommunications Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations Organization (UN), chose for the commemoration of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day 2022 the slogan 'Digital technologies for the elderly and healthy aging' . Since in the coming years the aging of the population will be a demographic trend, technologies can help build smart cities that guarantee the inclusion of the elderly. The aim is to ensure that the population remains healthy, connected and physically, emotionally and financially independent.
