RENIC: National Cybersecurity Research Network of Excellence

The RENIC is conceived as an open, participatory and non-exclusive Network, to offer services to the entire national cybersecurity research ecosystem.

On July 1, the National Cybersecurity Research Network of Excellence (RENIC) was legally established. This initiative, framed in the Confidence Plan in the Digital Area (derived from the Digital Agenda for Spain), aims to bring together the efforts of the current research ecosystem and direct its activity in a coordinated manner through a future master plan aligned with the European strategy and the real needs of the industry and end users.

The Network has been promoted by the National Cybersecurity Institute, an entity dependent on the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and for the Information Society.

After holding several work sessions made up of the Spanish Research Groups that are specialized in the field of cybersecurity, and once the Network's governance structure has been agreed upon, the Network's driving group has carried out the necessary procedures for the constitution of the association. The group of founding members of RENIC is initially made up of 16 organizations, including the University of Castilla - La Mancha, through the Superior School of Computing of Ciudad Real.

A particularly relevant milestone has been the election of RENIC, on July 7, as a full member of the Board of Directors of the European Cyber Security Organization (ECSO), thus fulfilling the objective of reinforcing the international positioning of the Spanish research ecosystem in cybersecurity through this public-private partnership in cybersecurity. This choice has been made between different applications from European research consortiums that sought to represent this sector in the ECSO, which is an accolade to the level of excellence exhibited by this network.
